Lion Rally Cut Short Despite Cuff Homer

LAFAYETTE, La. – A sixth-inning rally by the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team came up short Tuesday night at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park in a 9-3 loss at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette despite a two-run home run by Connor Cuff.

In the first of two meetings this season, Southeastern (13-12) trailed the Ragin' Cajuns (17-8), 6-0, entering the sixth.

Ben Robichaux drew a walk to lead off the frame. He advanced to second base on a groundout and then scored on Brody Capps' RBI single to right-center field. Cuff followed with his fifth homer of the season, cutting the deficit in half.

When Peyton Woods reached second on a grounder off the third baseman's glove, the Ragin' Cajuns pulled starting pitcher Ty Roman in favor of reliever JR Tollett. After the right-hander issued back-to-back walks to Giovanni Licciardi and Justin Williams to load the bases with one out, ULL brought closer Cody Brasch into the game.

Brasch struck out the next batter and then induced a flyout to left, ending the SLU threat.

A three-run home run in the seventh extended the Ragin' Cajun lead.

Roman (2-2) earned the win, allowing three runs – all earned – in 5.1 innings pitched. He scattered three hits, one walk and a pair of hit batters, striking out four. Luke Lirette (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing a pair of runs in 3.0 innings of work.
