Lions Outslug UNO in Series Opener

Priester, Williams both blast multiple homers

HAMMOND, La. – In a game that featured nine home runs combined, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team outslugged New Orleans on the way to a 13-11 victory in Southland Conference action Friday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Justin Williams and Blaise Priester became the third and fourth Southeastern (14-12, 6-4 SLC) players in the last week to homer multiple times in the same game, with Williams also becoming the first Lion to hit three home runs in a single game since the 2019 season.

UNO (11-17, 4-9 SLC) took the initial lead on Dylan Biddick's first home run of the contest, a solo shot over the center field wall with one out in the first inning.

The Lions tied it up in the bottom half of the inning. Ben Robichaux, who joined Priester and Williams with a three-hit performance at the plate, scored from first following an error in right-center on Brody Capps' double into the gap.

SLU took the lead, 3-1, in the second on Williams' first homer, a two-run shot down to right following a leadoff walk to Alex Perry.

Williams and Priester extended the Lions' lead to 7-1 with a pair of two-run shots in the third.

After neither team scored in the fourth, the Privateers set to work on erasing the Southeastern advantage. Hit batters led to a pair of runs in the fifth and another in the sixth, cutting the UNO deficit in half.

Privateer first baseman Kruise Newman tied the game in the seventh with a three-run homer to right-center. It was his team-leading seventh of the season. Three batters later, catcher Jayden Adcox launched his second of the season, a two-run shot to left that put UNO up. An RBI single two batters later extended that lead to 10-7.

SLU responded immediately. Following a leadoff walk to Perry in the bottom of the inning, Williams sent his third home run of the game sailing down the right-field line. Brooks Wright, who drew his third walk of the game one batter later, came around to score the tying run following an error on Priester's double down the left-field line.

Biddick put UNO back up, 11-10, with another solo home run in the eighth. It was his fifth of the season.

The Lions regained the lead, 13-11, in the bottom of the inning. Perry drew a one-out walk. After Perry advanced to second on a wild pitch, UNO issued an intentional walk to Williams. Two batters later, Priester launched a towering shot down the left-field line for a three-run homer. It was his fifth of the season.

Triston Todorowski (1-2) earned the win, allowing one run in 2.0 innings of relief work. He struck out one. UNO reliever Lane Alack (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs – three earned – in 2.0 innings of work.

Priester (3-for-4), Robichaux (3-for-5), Williams (3-for-4) and Brody Capps (2-for-5) all produced multiple hits for the Lions. Williams drove in six and Priester plated five.

Williams is the first Lion to hit three home runs in a single game since Nick Ray accomplished the feat on March 22, 2019, at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field against Abilene Christian.
