HAMMOND, La. – Blaise Priester's ninth-inning single plated the winning run as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team rallied for an 8-7, walk-off victory over Stephen F. Austin in Southland Conference action Saturday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
With the win, Southeastern (11-8, 4-1 SLC) clinches the series and remains atop the conference standings while extending its winning streak to 10 consecutive games over the Lumberjacks (11-9, 4-4 SLC).
The Lions built a 4-0 lead through four innings.
Alex Perry brought home
Connor Cuff with a sacrifice bunt in the second.
In the third, an RBI double by
Brody Capps and an RBI single off the bat of
Justin Williams extended the SLU lead.
Perry led off the fourth with a home run to left. The solo shot was his second of the season.
A Southeastern error led to the Lumberjacks' first two runs, cutting the lead in half in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the inning, Perry drove in his third run of the game with an RBI single down the left-field line to put SLU up, 5-2.
SFA took a 6-5 lead in the sixth, launching a pair of home runs, and then added a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly.
Capps tied the game back up in the bottom of the eighth. After
Giovanni Licciardi drew a leadoff walk, Capps lined the ball out of the ballpark to deep right-center field. The two-run blast was his team-leading sixth of the season.
After
Truitt Webb worked around a leadoff single in the ninth, Perry led off the bottom of the inning with a single to left.
Peyton Woods sacrificed Perry into scoring position, setting up Priester's game-winning single.
Webb (2-0) earned the win, logging a scoreless inning in relief. Seanan Farney (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing one run in 0.1 innings pitched.
SLU pounded out 14 hits in the game with Capps (3-for-5), Perry (3-for-4), Williams (2-for-5) and Woods (2-for-2) contributing multiple hits apiece. It was the 10
th time this season the Lions have produced double-digit hits in a game and the seventh time in the last eight contests.
