Lions Drop Series Finale, 3-2

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team's comeback attempt came up short, 3-2, Sunday against Stephen F. Austin in Southland Conference action at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Southeastern (11-9, 4-2 SLC) erased an early 2-0 deficit against the Lumberjacks (12-9, 5-4 SLC) in the second inning.

Justin Williams led off with a single, advancing to third on Peyton Woods' double to left-center field. Williams scored on Alex Perry's RBI groundout to second base. Blaise Priester, Saturday's comeback hero, brought in Woods with the tying run on an RBI single to center.

Both starting pitchers settled in from that point forward, working through potential run-scoring situations without any damage. SLU starter Blake Lobell scattered two runs through 6.0 innings pitched, striking out four, while SFA starter Dylan Mulcahy limited the Lions to a pair of runs in 5.0 innings of work. Neither pitcher factored in the final decision.

The Lumberjacks broke the stalemate in the eighth. After back-to-back singles, the ball kicked away from the Southeastern outfielders, allowing the lead runner to score all the way from first.

Truitt Webb minimized the damage in the eighth and worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the ninth without allowing a run.

SLU put a runner on with two outs in both the eighth and ninth, but twice struck out to end the inning.

SFA reliever Nate Vidlak (1-1) earned the win, spinning four shutout innings to finish out the game. He scattered two hits, a walk and a hit batter, while striking out seven. Luke Barbier (0-1) suffered the loss for the Lions, allowing an unearned run over 1.1 innings of relief work.

Justin Williams (2-for-3) and Brooks Wright (2-for-4) contributed multiple hits each to Southeastern's offensive effort.

SLU wraps up a four-game homestand Tuesday, hosting No. 9-ranked Oklahoma for Pack the Patty at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
