HAMMOND, La. – The two-time reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team opened an eight-game home stand with an 11-3 victory over Southern Miss in six innings Wednesday evening at North Oak Park.
Playing at home for the first time in a month, SLU (19-9) scored in every inning and collected double-digit hits for the fifth straight game on the way to extending its win streak to five games. USM fell to 18-10 overall with the loss.
SLU scored in every inning on the way to the win.
Colleen Kulivan led the way with a 3-for-3 showing that included an inside-the-park home run.
Maria Detillier and
Shenita Tucker each had two hits, while
Shelby Morris hit her first home run of the season.
Hallie Burns (6-3),
Cera Blanchard and
Haley Crawford combined to hold the visiting Golden Eagles to six hits.
Southeastern jumped on top in the bottom of the first inning. Sacrifice flies by
Cydnee Schneider and
Brilee Ford gave SLU a 2-0 lead. A USM error in the bottom of the second allowed the Lady Lions stretch their advantage to 3-0.
After USM scratched across a run in the top of the third, SLU answered right back. An RBI single by
Kailey Dixon and an RBI sacrifice bunt put SLU up, 5-1.
Southeastern further padded its cushion in the bottom of the fourth inning. Morris powered the first pitch of the inning over the right field fence, then
Ka'Lyn Watson tripled home a run later in the frame to give the Lady Lions a 7-1 lead.
USM cut the lead to 7-3 in their half of the fifth, but SLU again responded in the bottom of the frame. Kulivan lined a shot into right centerfield that split two diving Southern Miss outfielders. The speedster from Covington, Louisiana motored all the way home for her second career inside-the-park home run. Later in the inning, an RBI single by Detillier put Southeastern up, 9-3.
The Lady Lions ended it in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tucker's two-run single scored Kulivan and
