Southeastern Splits Pair on Day Two of NFCA Leadoff Classic

SLU pitching holds South Alabama and Longwood to four combined hits Friday

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The two-time reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team finished 1-1 on the second day of the NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic Friday evening at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.

Southeastern (1-2) opened the day with a 2-0 loss to South Alabama (2-0). The Lady Lions bounced back with a 9-0 mercy-rule win over Longwood (0-2) in the nightcap.

Hallie Burns struck out seven batters in 4.1 innings of relief in the loss to USA, as she and Cera Blanchard combined to hold the Jaguars scoreless over the final six innings after South Alabama touched up Southeastern freshman starter Katherine Thiessen (0-1) for two runs in the top of the first inning. But the SLU bats were held to just four hits in a complete-game shutout effort by Ryley Harrison (2-0).

The Lady Lion offense came alive in the win over Longwood, as SLU scored seven runs in the first two innings and never looked back in the victory. Blanchard (1-0) struck out four in four no-hit innings of work to back up the Southeastern offensive onslaught, as she and Bre Clark combined for the team's first shutout of the spring.

Shelby Morris led SLU with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate, while Ka'Lyn Watson lined her first home run of the season over the right centerfield fence. Morris, Watson and Chloe Magee each drove in two runs, while Colleen Kulivan and Cydnee Schneider each had two hits apiece to fuel an 11-hit Southeastern attack.

Southeastern will be back in action Saturday, facing Rutgers at 2 p.m. and Boston College at 5 p.m. Both games can be streamed for free via the Game Changer app.
