SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The two-time reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team came out on the wrong end of a 2-1 pitcher's duel at UTSA Thursday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
SLU (13-5) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, only for UTSA (6-9) to take the lead in the bottom of the frame. Southeastern out-hit the Roadrunners, 8-4, but left nine runners on base in the loss.
Kailey Dixon led the Lady Lions at the plate with a 3-for-3 showing.
Shelby Morris added two hits for SLU and broke a scoreless tie when she scored on a two-out RBI single by
Cydnee Schneider in the top of the fifth inning.
Hailee Burns (4-2) had held the Roadrunners in check until the bottom of the fifth, when she was chased after allowing back-to-back singles to Taryn Madlock and Katia Reyes. One out later, Skylar Rucker doubled just outside of the reach of a diving
Colleen Kulivan to give UTSA a 2-1 lead.
Maria Detillier reached on an error in the top of the seventh inning, but UTSA pitcher Arlette Hernandez (5-2) retired Schneider to close out the win.
Southeastern will return to action Friday, opening a three-game series at Texas State with a 3 p.m. doubleheader in San Marcos, Texas.
