No. 3 Texas Pulls Away Late for 7-2 Win over SLU

Southeastern (13-4) returns to action Thursday at UTSA (4 p.m., ESPN+)

AUSTIN, Texas – The two-time reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team opened its seven-game, five-day road trip with a 7-2 loss to reigning national champion and No. 3 Texas Wednesday night at Red and Charline McCombs Field.

Southeastern (13-4) had its nine-game winning streak snapped. With the game tied at 2-2 heading to the bottom of the fourth, the host Longhorns (15-1) scored two in the fourth inning and three in the fifth inning to pull away for the win.

Shelby Morris led SLU with two hits, while Chloe Magee (2 BB) and Kailey Dixon (1 1B, 1 BB) both also reached twice. With Southeastern trailing, 2-0, after a first-inning home run by UT catcher Reese Atwood, Maria Detillier plated Morris and Dixon with a two-run double to tie the score in the top of the third inning.

After striking out a pair in a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the third, Lady Lion pitcher Hallie Burns (4-1) allowed a two-run double to MaTaia Lawson to give Texas a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Texas tagged Southeastern reliever Macie LaRue for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, though the quartet of Cera Blanchard, Burns, LaRue and Haley Crawford did limit the high-powered Longhorns to seven hits.

Once the lead was stretched to 7-2, UT ace Teagan Kavan (7-0) held the Lady Lions without a hit for the remainder of the game. Kavan struck out eight and walked two, scattering five hits in the victory.

Southeastern will continue its challenging week Thursday with a 4 p.m. contest at UTSA. Thursday's game will be televised on ESPN+.
