HAMMOND, La. – The two-time reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion and No. 25 Southeastern Louisiana University softball team opened its home schedule with a 6-1 loss to Louisiana Tech Wednesday evening at North Oak Park.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for SLU (4-3). Louisiana Tech improved to 5-0 with the win.
Maria Detillier led SLU with two hits and scored Southeastern's lone run on an RBI groundout by
Cydnee Schneider.
Ka'Lyn Watson,
Shenita Tucker and
Chloe Magee were the only other Lady Lions to collect hits against Louisiana Tech pitcher Allie Floyd (1-0), who went the distance and fanned five in a complete-game effort.
Louisiana Tech took the lead in the top of the second against SLU starter
Haley Crawford (0-1), though the Houston native was able to limit the Bulldogs to just one run after the visitors loaded the bases with no outs.
The score would remain 1-0 until Louisiana Tech took advantage of a Southeastern error in the top of the fourth inning to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Detillier led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a double into the left field corner, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI groundout by Schneider to cut the lead to 3-1.
Southeastern would get no closer and a two-run home run by Jina Baffuto keyed a three-run sixth inning for the Bulldogs that provided the final 6-1 margin.
SLU will return to action Thursday, opening play at the Mardi Gras Mambo in Youngsville, La. with an 8 p.m. contest versus Eastern Illinois.
