HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team claimed its first win of the 2025 season with 2-0 victory over Southern Friday evening at Strawberry Stadium.
SLU (1-4-2) recognized six seniors before its match against Southern (1-6) as it rose to the occasion midway in the second half to claim two goals at home. Redshirt sophomore Ella Quinlan recorded her first goal of her career alongside senior Emma Ramsey sealed the win with her third goal of her career. Southeastern goalkeeper Kendall Curran played the entire match and closed out the match with three saves to aid in the win.
Both teams struggled out the gate to find their rhythm in the opening minutes of the match. Southeastern came out aggressive with its home field advantage, but Southern matched the physicality to limit opportunities. The Lady Lions formulated wide attacks to take advantage of the holes in Southern's defense, but the visitors held firm in their efforts. SLU continued to pressure the Lady Jaguars midway in the first half, but could not counter due to offensive breakdowns.
The Lady Lions remained on the attack with a 4-2 shot advantage in the first half as Southern refused to back down. SLU worked to capitalize off two corner kick opportunities, but could not connect for an early lead. Lady Jaguar goalkeeper Ava Droze battled the entire match in the net with three saves. Both teams ended the first half with strong defensive efforts to go into halftime scoreless.
Southeastern returned from the halftime break with a renewed intensity as it came out the gate of the opening minutes of the second half on the attack. Ella Quinlan provided the first major spark of momentum for the Lady Lions, connecting in the net in the 52nd minute of the match. Charlotte Lewis executed a flawless assist to position Quinlan as SLU claimed the first goal of the match, 1-0.
Southern worked to regroup and equalize the match, but Southeastern's defense denied every opportunity around the net. J'Lea Berry battled to fuel a counter attack for the Lady Jaguars, but SLU locked down the net in the second half. The Lady Lions continued to push to add to their lead and gained the reward in the 83rd minute of the match as Emma Ramsey connected in the net off a header. Sophomore midfielder Lainey Connell stepped up big to deliver the assist as Southeastern extended its lead late in the second half, 2-0.
SLU eagerly worked to add to its lead late in the match, but would get no further. Southern battled on the road, but could not cut into its deficit to close out the second half. The Lady Jaguars ended the match with five shots, one corner kick, and 13 fouls. Southeastern remained in control in the second half to record its first win of the season as Maggie Denison, Rylee Franklin, Eve Frousiakis, Mia Martin, Samantha Ostrowski, and Emma Ramsey were paid tribute. SLU ended the match with nine shots, five shots on goal and four corners.
The Lady Lions will travel to Edinburg, Texas to open Southland Conference play against UTRGV Sunday, Sept, 21 at 1 p.m. The match against the Vaqueros will be streamed on ESPN+.
