HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team scored touchdowns on its first four possessions and never looked back on the way to a 56-3 win over Mississippi Valley State in Saturday night's home opener in Strawberry Stadium.
Southeastern improved to 2-1 overall with its highest scoring output since a 70-6 win over Central Connecticut State on Sept. 17, 2022. The Lion defense limited visiting MVSU (0-3) to 164 total yards and nine first downs.
SLU led 42-3 at halftime and was able to go deep into its bench on the way to the victory. In the win, the Lions had standout performances in every phase.
Carson Camp (8-for-12, 147 yards, 2 TD) and
Kyle Lowe (8-for-8, 155 yards, 3 TD) split time under center and led a SLU offense that racked up 445 total yards.
Jaylon Domingeaux led the Southeastern receiving threats with four catches for 82 yards and three touchdowns – the first time a Lion has hauled in three touchdown receptions since the school's career leader Austin Mitchell grabbed three in a 49-30 win over UIW on Oct. 7, 2017.
Tristan Goodly and
Brandon Hayes also caught scoring passes in the victory.
Jaedon Henry added two rushing touchdowns for Southeastern, while
Calvin Smith Jr. paced the Lions with 14 carries for 69 yards.
The SLU defense finished with 12.0 tackles for loss and three sacks in Saturday's win.
Blayne Delahoussaye intercepted a pass, while
Evan Aubrey forced a fumble that was recovered by
KK Reno. Reno and
Jirrea Johnson Jr. led SLU with six tackles apiece.
On special teams,
Dkhai Joseph returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown for the Lions. It was the first punt return for a score for Southeastern since Devonte Williams housed one from 61 yards out in the 2019 regular season finale versus Nicholls.
Tyler Mansfield also blocked a MVSU punt for Southeastern.
At halftime of Saturday's game sponsored by North Oaks Health System, SLU recognized all members of the Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame in attendance, including the 2025 induction class of Mack Boatner (football), Courtney Donald Sweeney (volleyball), Cqulin Hubert (football), Ed Nodhturft (baseball), Hope Sabadash (soccer) and Sarah Williams (women's basketball).
SLU will close out nonconference play with a 6:45 p.m. contest at No. 3 LSU Saturday. The game between the Lions and Tigers will be televised on SEC Network and can be heard on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM, The Boss 103.7 FM/WFPR 1400 AM).
