SLU Rally Falls Short at HCU

HOUSTON, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team rallied late at Houston Christian, but fell short, 5-4, in Southland Conference action Saturday at Husky Field.

Down 5-0 to HCU (23-18, 15-8 SLC), Southeastern (32-11, 17-6 SLC) rallied for four runs in the seventh but went down in order during the final two innings.

The Huskies broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the third. Two scored on a bouncing single to left field and the other run came home on a wild pitch by Luke Lirette.

A two-run home run in the sixth off reliever Lakin Polk provided HCU with some insurance runs.

SLU sent nine batters to the plate in the seventh. Bailyn Sorensen led off with an infield single. Ben Robichaux followed with a single through the right side, sending Sorensen to third base. Parker Coley put the Lions on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly to right field.

With two outs, Robichaux went to third as TJ Salvaggio singled to left-center field. Conner O'Neal followed with an RBI single to right, chasing HCU starting pitcher Joshua Caravalho from the game. Reliever Nick Ferazzi walked Mo Little to load the bases and Dane Watts drove a two-run single to left-center. The Lions would ultimately strand a pair of runners in scoring position.

Caravalho (8-2) earned the win, allowing four runs – all earned – in 6.2 innings pitched. Ben Norton earned his sixth save, retiring all six batters he faced to close out the game. Lirette (4-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs – all earned – in 5.1 innings pitched.

Salvaggio (2-for-5) and Sorensen (2-for-4) turned in multiple hits for the Lions.
