Southeastern Secures Fourth Straight 40-Win Season, Completes SLC Series Sweep at UIW

SLU (40-11, 20-4 SLC) sweeps twin bill to extend win streak to eight

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team won both ends of a SLC doubleheader to complete a series sweep of league foe UIW Friday afternoon at H-E-B Field.

With the two wins, SLU (40-11, 20-4 SLC) secured its fourth straight season of 40 or more wins. The Lady Lions are the first Southland team to win 40 or more in four straight seasons since Nicholls had a five-year run of 40-plus victories from 1994-98.

The Lady Lions will host Nicholls next weekend in the final conference series of 2025. SLU will need one win in the three-game set to secure home-field advantage for one of the two bracket play rounds of the Southland Conference Tournament.

Southeastern opened the day with a 6-4 victory over UIW. Chloe Magee led SLU with three hits, while Maria Detillier, Shenita Tucker and Cydnee Schneider added two hits apiece. Schneider had a team-high four RBI, while Shelby Morris scored a pair of runs.

Macie LaRue (17-1) was again excellent in relief to earn the win in the circle. The junior ace tossed 4.2 innings of relief, allowing two hits and no earned runs in the win.

In the nightcap, Tucker was 3-for-3 at the plate and led SLU with two RBI in a 6-3 win. Morris added two hits, while Brilee Ford scored a pair of runs.

Britney Lewinski (8-4) threw 4.1 scoreless innings to earn a win in the nightcap, as she and Hallie Burns combined to hold the Cardinals to six hits.

Southeastern will return home to close out nonconference play Tuesday, hosting Alcorn State for a 4 p.m. doubleheader at North Oak Park. The twin bill will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard online at www.LionUpRadio.org.

Game One – Southeastern 6, UIW 4
Southeastern took the lead in the top of the first inning. Back-to-back singles by Morris and Magee to open the frame put a pair of runners on with no outs. Morris would eventually score when Schneider reached on a fielder's choice to give SLU a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning, heads up base running allowed the Lady Lions to double their advantage. With Kailey Dixon on third, Tucker drew a walk and took off for second. After Tucker drew a throw, Dixon stole home to give Southeastern a 2-0 advantage.

The Lady Lions scored for the third straight inning in their half of the third. Detillier singled, then scored when Schneider doubled in to the left centerfield gap to put SLU ahead, 3-0.

UIW got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. A towering two-run home run by reigning SLC Player of the Year Victoria Altamirano ended Burns' outing. Later in the frame, an RBI single by Jaisy Caceres and a SLU error allowed two more runs to come in, as the Cardinals sent 10 to the plate in the frame to take a 4-3 lead.

Southeastern answered right back in the top of the fourth inning. UIW reliever Jenny Robledo (4-2) hit Colleen Kulivan, who was bunted over to second by Ford, advanced to third on a Tucker single, then scored when Morris reached on a fielder's choice to tie the score. After a Magee single and a Detillier walk loaded the bases, Schneider continued her big day with a two-run single to put Southeastern up, 6-4.

The Cardinals drew three walks to load the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning. LaRue settled down, striking out Jasmine Sierra to keep the SLU lead at 6-4.

After giving up a leadoff walk in the seventh, LaRue induced a 6-3 double play and then retired Ryleigh Mata to close out the victory.

Game Two – Southeastern 6, UIW 3
Southeastern jumped out to the lead in the top of the second inning against UIW ace Larissa Jacquez (7-8). Tucker doubled off the left field wall to score Dixon and Brilee Broussard and give SLU a 2-0 cushion.

The Lady Lions added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Ford drew a leadoff walk and later scored on an error. Morris singled home Kulivan later in the frame to put Southeastern up, 4-0.

SLU padded its advantage in the fifth. Magee singled to lead off the frame, stole second, moved to third on a UIW error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ford to extend the advantage to 5-0.

After Lewinski pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth, UIW again loaded the bases in the fifth. However, Burns came in for Lewinski and got out of the jam to keep the Cardinals off the board.

Southeastern added to its lead in the top of the sixth inning. Tucker singled, stole second and scored on a single by Morris and a UIW error to put the Lady Lions up, 6-0.

UIW took advantage of a bases loaded opportunity in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the shutout. Mata hit a three-run triple just out of the reach of a diving Tucker, but Burns shook it off and retired Madison Dorrow to secure the series sweep.
