HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team closed out nonconference play with a doubleheader sweep of Alcorn State Tuesday afternoon at North Oak Park.
SLU (42-11) extended its win streak to 10 with a pair of 8-0 mercy-rule victories over the Lady Braves (10-27). The two shutouts give Southeastern a single-season school record 16 on the season, surpassing the previous standard of 15 set last spring.
In the opener,
Olivia Henry,
Allison Brunson (1-1) and
Celia Lamkin combined to hold Alcorn State to four hits.
Brilee Ford led SLU at the plate with three hits and three runs scored.
Breanna Fontenot finished with a team-high three RBI, while
Gabby Mitchell drove in a pair.
In the nightcap,
Lainee Bailey (3-1),
Macie LaRue and
Britney Lewinski limited the visitors to two hits.
Shelby Morris and
Chloe Magee each had three hits with Magee finishing a home run shy of the cycle. Magee and
Maria Detillier each drove in a pair, while Morris, Magee and
Brilee Broussard each scored two runs.
Southeastern will close out the regular season with a three-game conference series versus Nicholls for Alumni Weekend. for Alumni Weekend. The series with the Colonels opens with a 4 p.m. doubleheader Friday and concludes Saturday at noon. The three games can be seen on ESPN+ and can be heard online at

SLU will need one win in the three-game set to secure home-field advantage for one of the two bracket play rounds of the Southland Conference Tournament. For the first time, the top two seeds in the SLC standings will host four-team, double-elimination brackets. The No. 1 seed will host the 4,5 and 8 seeds, while the second seed will host seeds 3,6 and 7, May 1-4. The winners of the two brackets will advance to the championship series, hosted by the highest remaining seed, May 8-10.
Game One – Southeastern 8, Alcorn State 0 (5 Innings)
Broussard drew a leadoff walk, stole second, moved to third on an
Ariel Gomez single, then scored on a
Mykail Lusco grounder to give SLU the early lead in the bottom of the first against ASU starter Ta'Niyah Fletcher. Later in the frame, Mitchell singled home a pair to put SLU up, 3-0.
Brunson pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the third to keep Alcorn State off the board, then Southeastern doubled its lead in the bottom of the inning. Ford doubled and scored on an RBI single by
Blair Walsh, then Fontenot singled home a pair to extend the Lady Lion advantage to 6-0.
SLU walked it off in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Feline Poot singled in the inning's first run, then an Alcorn error led to the winning run scoring and allowed Southeastern to enforce the run rule.
Game Two – Southeastern 8, Alcorn State 0 (6 Innings)
SLU again jumped on top in the bottom of the first in the nightcap. RBI groundouts by Detillier and
Cydnee Schneider plated the first two runs, then
Colleen Kulivan singled home another run to give the Lady Lions a 3-0 cushion.
Southeastern could not add to its tally until breaking the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning. The inning's first run scored on an error, then Morris, Magee and Detillier had consecutive RBI to give SLU a commanding 7-0 lead.
The Lady Lions won it in the bottom of the sixth inning. Broussard singled, stole second and scored the run-rule clinching run on an RBI double by Magee to close out the 8-0 win.
