HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team completed an SLC series sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with a 5-0 win Friday afternoon at North Oak Park.
The win was the seventh straight for the league-leading Lady Lions (29-8, 11-1 SLC), who improved to 14-0 this season at home. The visiting Islanders fell to 9-23 overall and 3-9 in league play.
Britney Lewinski (5-4) went the distance in the circle for SLU, allowing two hits and striking out five in the complete-game shutout effort. Southeastern now has 11 shutouts on the season as a pitching staff and a 1.90 team earned run average.
Shelby Morris led SLU at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Shenita Tucker added two hits and two runs as well to help a nine-hit Southeastern attack.
Aggressive base running allowed the Lady Lions to strike first against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi starter Siarah Galvan (0-3). With Morris and Tucker on second and third with one out in the bottom of the third inning,
Maria Detillier hit a grounder to first. Monee Montilla's throw home was late, allowing Tucker to score the game's first run.
As the ball was making its way back to the circle, Detillier took off for second base. When Detillier drew a throw down to second, Morris took off and scored easily for a 2-0 Southeastern lead.
Southeastern blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth. With a pair of runners on, Tucker laced a triple to clear the bases. The triple was the Division I-leading and single-season school record 23
rd triple of the season by SLU.
Chloe Magee then drove in Morris with an RBI ground out to give SLU a 5-0 lead.
Lewinski made the lead hold up, as she was never seriously threatened. The Shorewood, Illinois native faced two over the minimum in the win, as two singles by Karisa Lopez were the only two base runners she allowed in the dominant effort.
Southeastern will close out its nonconference regular season road schedule Tuesday with a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Jackson State.
