HOUSTON, Texas – The reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team suffered its first Southland Conference loss, falling 6-3 to HCU Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.
HCU (10-14, 4-2 SLC) scored two runs in the fifth and added a run in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie on the way to ending a six-game winning streak for the Lady Lions (22-8, 5-1 SLC).
Maria Detillier hit her second home run of the season, while
Cydnee Schneider and
Kailey Dixon each had two hits to lead SLU at the plate in the loss.
HCU jumped on top in the bottom of the first inning. After Maddy Bailey beat out an infield single with two outs, Karlie Barba followed with a two-run home run over the centerfield fence to give the Huskies an early 2-0 lead.
Southeastern got on the board in the top of the second inning. Schneider and
Maddie Watson hit back-to-back doubles to open the frame to cut the lead in half.
In the third,
Chloe Magee doubled to lead off the frame, then scored one out later when
Brilee Ford lifted a double of her own into the left centerfield gap to tie the score at 2-2.
HCU loaded the bases with three straight singles to chase Lady Lion starter
Macie LaRue from the contest with one out in the bottom of the fourth.
Hallie Burns (8-3) came in and allowed a sacrifice fly to Ella Herrewig to put the Huskies up, 3-2.
Detillier tied it back up in the top of the fifth inning. The junior lined a two-out solo shot over the left field fence to knot the score at 3-3.
The Huskies answered in the bottom of the fifth. An RBI double by Chloe Foster, followed by an RBI single by Hanna York put HCU up, 5-3. The Huskies used a sacrifice fly in the sixth to add an insurance run and extend the lead to 6-3.
Southeastern would threaten in the top of the seventh. Singles by Dixon and
Shenita Tucker, as well as a Detillier walk loaded the bases with two outs. However, Bailey made a diving catch on a Ford line drive to end SLU's unbeaten start to conference play.
SLU returns home to host ULM for a 5 p.m. nonconference contest Wednesday at North Oak Park. The game will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard online at
