HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team improved to 11-0 at home this spring with a 5-2 nonconference victory over ULM Wednesday evening at North Oak Park.
The Lady Lions (23-8) broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run third inning. The loss snapped a five-game ULM winning streak, dropping the Warhawks to 22-11 overall.
Shelby Morris and
Brilee Ford led Southeastern with two hits apiece, while
Maddie Watson paced SLU with two RBI.
Macie LaRue (8-0) allowed one earned run in five innings of work to remain unbeaten in the circle, while
Britney Lewinski tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn her second save of 2025.
ULM took advantage of a SLU error and plated an unearned run in the top of the first inning, but the Lady Lions answered back in the bottom of the inning. Morris beat out an infield single, was sacrificed over to second by
Chloe Magee, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by SLC RBI leader
Maria Detillier to knot the score at 1-1.
LaRue stranded a pair of Warhawks in both the second and third innings before Southeastern busted the game open with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third. Magee scored the inning's first run on a two-base throwing error by ULM catcher Hollie Thomas.
Later in the frame, back-to-back singles by Detillier and Ford led to another run and a 3-1 lead. Watson followed a
Cydnee Schneider walk with a two-run double to clear the bases and give SLU a 5-1 cushion.
ULM cut into the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Meagan Brown led off the frame with a triple into the left field corner, then scored one out later on a double by Maryssa Zenzen. LaRue recovered and retired Thomas and Elle Carter to keep the SLU lead at 5-2.
The Warhawks put on a pair of base runners with two outs in the sixth, but Lewinski forced Meagan Brown to line out to Morris to end the threat. A Lady Lion error and a Thomas single put two on with one out in the seventh, but Lewinski struck out Reece Briggs and forced Layla Thompson to fly out to Tucker to close out the win.
Southeastern will head to Northwestern State for a three-game league series in Natchitoches. The series, which opens with a 4 p.m. doubleheader Friday and concludes with a noon contest Saturday, can be seen on ESPN+. The winner of the annual softball series between SLU and NSU receives the Cypress Trophy.
