Southeastern Opens SLC Road Slate with Doubleheader Sweep of HCU

SLU (22-7, 5-0 SLC) extends winning streak to six

HOUSTON, Texas – The reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team remained unbeaten in Southland Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of HCU Friday evening at Husky Field.

In a matchup of the top two teams in the SLC standings, SLU (22-7, 5-0 SLC) topped HCU (9-14, 3-2 SLC) twice to extend its win streak to six games.

In the opener, Maria Detillier was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead SLU to a 6-4 victory. After HCU took a 4-2 early lead, Hallie Burns (8-2) tossed five innings of shutout relief, scattering three hits in the win.

Chloe Magee led Southeastern with three hits in the nightcap, while Detillier and Cydnee Schneider each drove in three runs in a 13-4 run-rule victory. Burns again picked up the win in relief, allowing four hits in 3.1 innings of work.

The series wraps up Saturday at noon. The game will be televised live on ESPN+.

Game One – Southeastern 6, HCU 4
Southeastern jumped out to an early lead versus HCU starter Cara Pitman (3-2) in the top of the first inning. Shelby Morris drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on a Pitman throwing error to put SLU on top. Detillier followed with an RBI single to score Chloe Magee later in the frame to give the Lady Lions an early 2-0 lead.

HCU answered in its half of the first. Haylie Savage drew a one-out walk, moved to third on a Maddy Bailey double and scored on a Hanna York sacrifice fly to cut the Lady Lion lead to 2-1.

The Huskies then took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. The tying run came thanks to a Lady Lion error, then Savage doubled a pair of runs in to give HCU a 4-2 lead.

Southeastern retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Singles by Kailey Dixon and Magee put a pair on, then Detillier hit a home run over the centerfield fence to put SLU on top, 5-4.

SLU added to its lead without the benefit of a hit in the sixth. Cydnee Schneider drew a walk and Brilee Broussard replaced her on the base paths. Broussard stole second, was sacrificed to third by Maddie Watson and scored on an RBI groundout by Brilee Ford to extend its advantage to 6-4.

HCU put a pair of runners on with one out in the bottom of the seventh. However, Burns retired York and Castillo to secure the victory.

Game Two – Southeastern 13, HCU 4 (5 Innings)
Southeastern used heads up base running to take an early lead versus HCU. Ford and Magee executed a perfect double steal with the latter swiping home for the game's first run to put the Lady Lions up, 1-0.

HCU answered in the bottom of the first. Bailey doubled home the first two runs of the inning, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Karlie Barba to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead.

Southeastern retook the lead in the top of the third inning. Morris walked, stole second and scored on a one-out single by Ford. Later in the frame, Schneider doubled home a pair of runs to give the Lady Lions a 4-3 advantage.

SLU broke the game open in the top of the fourth inning. Shenita Tucker doubled home the inning's first run, then scored on a Magee RBI single. Later in the inning, Detillier doubled home a pair of runs and scored later in the frame on an RBI single by Watson.
Dixon and Tucker drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to force in two more runs and put SLU up, 11-3.

Burns hit Barba with the bases loaded to force in a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Lady Lion lead to 11-4.

Magee led off the SLU fifth with a single and promptly advanced to second on a wild pitch. Detillier followed with her second double of the contest to score Magee. Back-to-back fly outs by Ford and Schneider forced in Detillier and provided a 13-4 Lady Lion lead.

Burns allowed HCU to load the bases in the fifth, but was able to get out of the inning unscathed to close out the mercy rule victory.
