HAMMOND, La. – Right-hander
Brennan Stuprich, D1Baseball's preseason Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year, struck out a career-high 13 batters as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team shut out Lindenwood, 6-0, in the season opener Friday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni.
Ryan Brome and
Parker Coley both homered to spark the Southeastern (1-0) offense.
Stuprich (1-0), who fanned the side in the first inning, carried a no-hitter into the fifth on his way to earning the win. His fast start carried over to the bottom of the first.
Brome led off the SLU half of the first with a solo home run to right field. One out later
Jude Hall singled to center, later advancing to second base on a passed ball. Third baseman
Mo Little then delivered an RBI single to right-center field to stake Stuprich to a 2-0 lead.
The redshirt senior from Kenner, Louisiana fanned a pair of batters in both the second and fourth. He also recorded all three outs in the third and fifth by striking out the Lindenwood (0-1) hitters.
Designated hitter
Logan Walters and second baseman
Ben Robichaux knocked back-to-back singles to open up the fourth for Southeastern. Coley followed with a towering blast to left field, extending the SLU lead to 5-0 over their opponent out of the Ohio Valley Conference.
A sixth-inning triple by Hall to right-center drove in
Cole Stromboe with the final run of the night.
Freshman
Truitt Webb and UL Lafayette transfer
Patrick Vienne worked a pair of scoreless innings each for the Lions to close out the game on the mound. Josh Newell (0-1) suffered the loss for Lindenwood.
Brome (3-for-4), Hall (2-for-4) and Little (2-for-4) turned in multi-hit performances at the plate for SLU as the Lions pounded out 12 hits in the game.
Friday's win marks the sixth consecutive season SLU has shut out an opponent on opening weekend. Stuprich had a hand in one of the three shutouts the Lions tossed in 2021 during the season-opening series against Mississippi Valley State.
