HAMMOND, La. – The two-time reigning Southland Conference regular season champion Southeastern Louisiana University indoor volleyball team remained unbeaten at home this fall with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-16 win over SLC foe Northwestern State Thursday evening in the University Center.
SLU (12-5, 4-1 SLC) improved to 7-0 this fall in the friendly confines of the UC. The visiting Demons fell to 1-18 overall and 0-5 in Southland play.
Thursday was a night of season highs for SLU, which finished with a season-best .375 hitting percentage, while holding the visiting Demons to a -.022 hitting percentage – the lowest by a Lady Lion opponent this season.
Kyra McKelvey led SLU with 10 kills on 12 swings, hitting .833 for the match.
Anne Brauckmiller posted nine kills, while
Alexis Logarbo had an efficient night with a .667 hitting percentage and six kills.
Ashley Richardson and
Peyton Stokley shared setting duties contributing 22 and 15 assists, respectively.
The Lions finished with 11 total team blocks in the season-best defensive effort.
Ainsley Driska finished with a team-high and personal season-high with six blocks, while Logarbo added five.
Lexi Gonzalez was the lone Lady Lion with double-digit digs, finishing with a match-high 12.
Deja Benjamin led Northwestern State with nine kills, while Reagan Hamm paced the Demons with 13 assists. Emmarie McFarland's 11 digs were good for team-high honors for NSU.
The first set was all Southeastern, as the Lady Lions never trailed. SLU hit .483 in the opening set, while holding the visitors to a -.030 hitting percentage. Logarbo and McKelvey each finished with four kills to stake Southeastern to the early advantage.
The second set was more of the same, as SLU out-hit Northwestern State, .423 to -.038 to take a 2-0 lead. Southeastern saw 18 players see action in the match and completed its fourth straight home sweep.
Southeastern will be back in action Saturday, hosting East Texas A&M (4-12, 2-3 SLC) for a noon match in the University Center. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to Saturday's match to support the Lady Lions for the annual Pink Out match. The battle of the Lions will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard on KSLU 90.9 The Lion.
