HAMMOND, La. – The two-time reigning Southland Conference regular season champion Southeastern Louisiana University indoor volleyball team earned a 25-17, 25-15, 19-25, 25-21 SLC victory over East Texas A&M Saturday afternoon in the University Center.
Southeastern (13-5, 5-1 SLC) shook off a tough third set to improve to 8-0 this season at home. East Texas A&M fell to 4-13 overall and 2-4 in conference action.
Three Lady Lions posted double-digit kills in the win.
Kyra McKelvey finished with 20 kills, while
India Bennett added 13.
Anne Brauckmiller posted her second double-double of the season, finishing with 12 kills and a team-high 19 digs.
Ashley Richardson led SLU with 30 assists, while
Peyton Stokley contributed 25.
Brauckmiller was one of three Lady Lions with double-digit digs, as Abby Bailey and
Lexi Gonzalez contributed 15 apiece. Bennett led SLU with seven blocks, followed by
Alexis Logarbo and
Ayla Klingenberg with five and four, respectively.
Gracie Campbell led East Texas A&M with 13 kills to go with 14 digs in a double-double effort. Haley Mullaney (23 assists), Jade Washington (21 digs) and Nevaeh Smith (seven blocks were the other team leaders for the visiting Lions.
Neither team could get a clear advantage through most of the opening set, though SLU took control in the second half of the set. Bennett and McKelvey each had five kills, as the Lady Lions took an early one-set lead.
Southeastern carried the momentum over to the second set. The Lady Lions held ETAMU to a .071 hitting percentage in set two to take a comfortable two-set advantage.
East Texas A&M would not go away quietly, however. The visiting Lions held SLU to a .111 third-set hitting percentage to force a fourth set.
ETAMU took an early lead in the fourth set, but SLU took the lead for good with a 7-0 run that put the Lady Lions up, 12-7. The visitors hung tough, but could never get closer than two in the remainder of the final set, as Southeastern closed out the home win.
Southeastern will next return to the road, heading to UTRGV for a 6:30 p.m. contest Thursday in Edinburg, Texas. The contest will be televised on ESPN+.
