HAMMOND, La. – The two-time reigning Southland Conference regular season champion Southeastern Louisiana University indoor volleyball team celebrated Alumni Day with a 25-22, 25-20, 25-17 win over HCU in conference action Saturday afternoon in the University Center.
SLU (16-6, 8-2 SLC) hit .310 in the victory on the way to sweeping an HCU team (11-12, 6-4 SLC) that came into the match a game behind the Lady Lions in the Southland Conference standings. Southeastern cruised to the win despite playing without top players Abby Bailey,
Anne Brauckmiller and
Lexi Gonzalez.
Kyra McKelvey led the Lady Lions with 15 kills and hit .500 for the match, while
India Bennett joined her in double figures with 10 kills and
Alexis Logarbo contributed eight kills to the balanced SLU attack.
Peyton Stokley led Southeastern with 21 assists and reached 1,000 career assists one match after fellow Lady Lion setter
Ashley Richardson achieved the milestone. Richardson finished with 17 assists in Saturday's win.
Allana Archie led HCU with 13 kills, but SLU held the Huskies to a .174 hitting percentage. Stepping in at libero for Gonzalez,
Audrey Vielguth paced Southeastern with seven digs. Bennett and McKelvey led the Lady Lions with four blocks apiece.
After a highly-competitive opening set that saw both teams hit above .300, SLU controlled the rest of the match. Southeastern held the Huskies to a .127 hitting percentage over the final two sets, while hitting .304 over the same time frame on the way to the sweep of the Huskies.
Southeastern will play back-to-back matches next week versus league and in-state foe New Orleans. The first match of the home-and-home will be in the Big Easy Tuesday with first serve set for 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
