SLU Earns Seventh and Sixth-Place Finishes at Battle for New Orleans

Lions Led by Pitarro, Schillage in Season-Opening Meet

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University cross country team opened its season at the Battle for New Orleans meet and saw the Lady Lions earn a sixth-place finish while the Lions finished in seventh-place in the team competition on Friday evening.
 
On the 4K course, the Lady Lions were paced by Ava Pitarro, who crossed the line in 31st place overall in a time of 16:14.87. Next to cross for Southeastern was Laney Wilkes in 49th place in 17:47.78. Two spots behind was Isabella Latkovich, crossing in 51st place in 17:54.36. Cayden Boudreaux followed, coming home in 18:30.96 for a 54th place finish. Wrapping up SLU's field was Kayten Zeigler, who came home in 20:53.24. The Lady Lions scored 200 points for the sixth-place team result.
 
The men finished the evening on a 5K course, and the Lions were led by Landen Schillage who stopped the clock in 16:43.05 for a 38th place finish. Coming home next for Southeastern was Joel Boerkey, who crossed the line in 16:54.83 for a 41st place finish. Bryce Johnson was the next person to come home, finishing 42nd in 17:02.82. Tanner Salsman followedin 55th with a time of 17:51.48. Courtlin Baunchand was the last of the scorers to stop the clock for Southeastern, clocking in at 18:22.50. Triston Watford came in with a time of 19:07.43 to finish in 70th while Darian Chestnut rounded out SLU's field for the day with a 75th place finish with a time of 19:37.47. The Lions completed the race with 187 points in the team competition, good for seventh-place.
 
Southeastern's returns to the course in two weeks at the LSU Invitational. The men will open the day with a 2x4K relay at 8:15 a.m. while the women follow by running a 2x3K relay at 9 a.m. with both races taking place at the University Club in Baton Rouge on the LSU campus.
