HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team swept a doubleheader, 12-4 and 9-8, from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Southland Conference action Thursday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
With the pair of victories, Southeastern (28-25, 10-13 SLC) clinched its spot in the 2024 North Oaks Health System Southland Conference Baseball Championship. The Lions jumped up to sixth in the standings, moving ahead of both UIW (24-28, 9-13 SLC) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (21-33, 9-14 SLC).
The tournament is set to be held, May 22-25, at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field with the top eight teams in the conference standings qualifying for the Southland's postseason tournament. More information can be found online at www.LionSports.net/SLCtournament.
SLU pounded out double-digit hits in both games, marking the 12
th time in the last 14 games it has accomplished the feat.
The Lions also hit seven home runs – three in the opening game and four in the nightcap – for a total of 79 so far this season. That mark trails only the 83 homers hit by both the 1997 and 1998 squads on the program's single-season leaderboards.

GAME ONE – SLU 12, AMCC 4
An early pitcher's duel turned into a back-and-forth affair before Southeastern ran away with it down the stretch.
The Islanders scored first, pushing across a run in the third.
SLU answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning. Three consecutive singles by
Parker Coley,
Ryan Brome and SJ Salvaggio (RBI) to open up the frame brought in the tying run.
A pair of runs in the fourth put the Islanders back on top, 3-1, but not for long as Southeastern responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to tie it up.
Rhett Rosevear singled to open up the inning, advancing to third on
Jude Hall's double to left.
Cole Stromboe greeted new the A&M-Corpus Christi reliever with a single up the middle, bringing home both Rosevear and Hall.
The Islanders took one last lead in the fifth, pushing across a run on back-to-back hits by Issac Webb (double) and Cole Modgling (RBI single).
A two-run homer by Hall in the bottom of the inning put the Lions on top, 6-5, and from that point forward Southeastern continued to tack on runs against the Islander bullpen. It was Hall's eighth homer of the season.
Shea Thomas delivered an RBI single in the sixth, while homers by both
Conner O'Neal and Brome led to a four-run seventh. Stromboe added an RBI single in the eighth and Hall scored the final run on a wild pitch.
Brennan Stuprich (5-3) earned the win, allowing four runs – all earned – in six innings pitched. He scattered 10 hits and did not walk a batter, striking out three.
Jackson Rodriguez (2.0 IP) and Levin Bennett (1.0 IP) closed out the game without allowing a run. Kendal Dove (1-5) suffered the loss in relief, allowing two runs – both earned – in two innings of work.
The Lions pounded out 16 hits in the game. Brome (3-for-5), Coley (2-for-5), Hall (2-for-3), O'Neal (2-for-4), Salvaggio (2-for-4) and Stromboe (2-for-4) all turned in multi-hit performances in the series opener.
GAME TWO – SLU 9, AMCC 8
A&M-Corpus Christi picked up an unearned run in the first, but SLU tied it up on its first swing of the game.
Coley led off the bottom of the inning with his first of two home runs in the game. Thomas added an RBI double later in the inning to give the Lions the lead, 2-1.
A two-run double by Coley in the second added to Southeastern's lead.
The Islanders cut the lead to one with a solo home run from Webb and an RBI ground in the third.
Thomas got a run back, leading off the third with a solo home run. It was his 10
th of the season.
Coley's second homer, his 10
th of the season, was a solo shot in the fourth. It extended the Lions advantage to 6-3.
A solo home run by A&M-Corpus Christi first baseman Logan Vaughan pulled the Islanders a run closer.
The teams endured a 1:20 weather delay in the top of the seventh. Once returning to action, The Islanders scratched across a run on a sacrifice fly off SLU reliever
Lakin Polk, temporarily making it a one-run contest.
Leading 6-5, the Lions added some insurance runs in the bottom of the inning. O'Neal delivered a pinch-hit, RBI single. He came around to score on Hall's second homer of the day and ninth of the season.
A two-out, two-run single by A&M-Corpus Christi in the eighth cut the Lion lead in half and Vaughan's second home run, a solo shot in the ninth, completed the scoring.
Larson Fabre (3-1) earned the win in relief, allowing one run in 1.1 innings of work. Rodriguez worked the ninth to pick up his seventh save of the season. Islander starting pitcher Zach Garcia (4-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs – all earned – in his six-inning stint.
Coley (3-for-3), Haze (2-for-4) and Thomas (2-for-4) all contributed multiple hits as Southeastern rapped out 11 total in the contest.
