Day Two Recap
PHILADELPHIA, Penn. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track and field team's two competitors on the final day of the Penn Relays, presented by Toyota, both brought home podium finishes on Saturday at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania to wrap up the team's final competition prior to the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.
The day started with the high jump competition,
Slavko Stevic's specialty. After passing on the opening heights, Stevic started his day by clearing 2.01 meters (6'7"), 2.06 meters (6'9"), and 2.11 meters (6'11") all on his first attempt at each height. He ran into a bit of trouble at 2.14 meters (7'0.25"), knocking the bar down on his first two attempts, but cleared it on his third and final attempt. Stevic then passed on trying 2.17 meters (7'1.5"), opting to go straight for 2.20 meters (7'2.5") which would have surpassed his current season best of 2.19 meters (7'2.25"). However, he was unable to reset his season best, knocking the bar down on all three attempts at 2.20 meters, ending his day. His final mark would be set at 2.14 meters (7'0.25"), which earned him the bronze medal from the event.
Southeastern's final competitor at the Penn Relays was
Lance Hamilton in the triple jump. Hamilton immediately placed himself in a podium position as his first jump went 14.68 meters (48'2"), good enough for second place after the first flight of athletes all completed their first jumps. While he improved his mark with his second jump, going 14.74 meters (48'4.5"), he would still slip back a spot to third-place after the second jump. He faulted on his third attempt, remaining in third. He went back to improving his position with his fourth attempt, where he travelled 14.85 meters (48'8.75") to move back up to second place. His fifth jump would be his best of the day, going 15.34 meters (50'4"), but would still be shy of the first-place competitor through five attempts. He would fault on his sixth, and final, jump attempt, giving him a second-place finish when all of the jumpers in the first flight were done. When the second, and final, flight of competitors finished all of their jumps, Hamilton remained in second place, taking home a silver medal to wrap up SLU's participation in the event.
Stevic, Hamilton, and the rest of the Lions will now enjoy a week off as they make their final preparations for the 2024 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships, which runs from Thurs., May 9 to Sat., May 11 from the Wendel D. Ley Track & Holloway Field on the campus of Rice University in Houston, Texas. The 2024 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships will be live streamed on ESPN+ with live results available through the Southland Conference.
