SLU Rally Falls Short in 7-5 Loss to Nicholls

Southeastern (37-10, 14-4 SLC) returns home to host Alcorn State Tuesday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader

THIBODAUX, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team's seventh-inning rally fell short in a 7-5 loss to Nicholls Saturday afternoon at Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park.

The loss ended a streak of 14 consecutive Southland Conference series won by Southeastern (37-10, 14-4 SLC). After SLU took the series opener, Nicholls (25-21, 12-6 SLC) rallied to win the final two games of the set.

The Lady Lions were led at the plate by Maria Detillier and Chloe Magee with two hits apiece. Detillier, Lexi Johnson and Colleen Kulivan all drove in runs for SLU.

Southeastern took the lead in the top of the third inning. Cam Goodman led off the frame with a bunt single, stole second, moved to third on a Magee single and scored on a wild pitch. Detillier followed with a double to plate Magee and give SLU a 2-0 lead.

Nicholls finally got to Allison Brunson in the bottom of the third inning. The Colonels sent nine to the plate in a five-run frame to take a 5-2 lead.

SLU cut into the lead in the top of the fourth inning. An RBI groundout by Kulivan scored Bailey Krolczyk and trimmed the Nicholls advantage to 5-3.

Nicholls got the run back in the fifth, taking advantage of a Lady Lion error to extend the lead to 6-3. An RBI single by Reagan Heflin extended the Nicholls lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Southeastern mounted a two-out rally in the top of the seventh inning. Johnson singled home Ka'Lyn Watson and then another run came in on a Colonel error to cut the lead to 7-5. Krolczyk followed with a hot shot that Nicholls first baseman Riley Rutherford made a nice play on and beat Krolczyk to the bag by a step to secure the win for Nicholls.

Southeastern will now return home to close out its regular season home schedule with a five-game home stand. SLU welcomes Alcorn State Tuesday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader that will be televised on ESPN+. Tuesday will be Fan Appreciation Night and fans in attendance will be able to enjoy fireworks at North Oak Park.
