HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team defeated Alcorn State in run-rule fashion Tuesday, 12-2, in seven innings at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Southeastern (9-4) started a little sluggish, falling behind the Braves (0-10), 2-0, in the second inning. From that point forward, it was all SLU.
The Lions answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, sending nine batters to the plate.
Jake Haze was hit by a pitch to open it up and catcher
Bailyn Sorensen followed with a single through the left side. After
Parker Coley drew a walk to load the bases, designated hitter
Peyton Woods plated a run after being hit by a pitch.
TJ Salvaggio followed with a two-run single up the middle. Woods eventually scored on a groundout.
SLU picked up two more runs in the third.
Haze and Sorensen started it off with back-to-back singles. A throwing error on a fielder's choice grounder loaded the bases. Haze scored on a double-play ball and Sorensen scored on Salvaggio's RBI single to right.
Up 6-2, the Lions added two more runs to their lead in the sixth.
Woods and Salvaggio produced back-to-back singles to open up the inning. They would eventually come around to score on a sacrifice fly and a groundout.
The final four runs came in the seventh.
Haze drew a walk to lead off the inning. Following a wild pitch, he scored from second on Sorensen's double off the center-field wall. Sorensen scored on Coley's double up the middle and Woods ended it with a two-run home run to right-center. It was the first collegiate homer for the freshman from Albany, Louisiana.
Starting pitcher
Carson Robb (2-0) earned the win, tossing 2.2 innings. He allowed two runs – one earned – while allowing one hit and one walk. He struck out five batters, combining with two other Lion pitchers to fan a total of 15 batters in the game. Alcorn starting pitcher Hayden Konkler (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs – all earned – in one inning of work.
Salvaggio (3-for-3), Sorensen (3-for-4) and Woods (2-for-3) led the Lions at the plate. Salvaggio and Woods both in three runs apiece.
Justin Williams picked up two RBIs despite finishing without a hit.

Southeastern hosts No. 2-ranked LSU in a sold-out game Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
