HAMMOND, La. – No. 2-ranked LSU rallied for three runs in the ninth inning Wednesday dropping the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team in heart-breaking fashion, 4-3, at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Southeastern (9-5) went to-to-toe early with the Tigers (12-1) despite the success of their freshman left-hander Kade Anderson. The southpaw fanned the first seven batters he faced and held SLU hitless into the fourth.
LSU broke up the scoreless tie in the fifth, sandwiching a pair of singles around a ground out to produce the first run of the game.
Anderson would exit in the sixth after surrendering a leadoff double to
Jude Hall. He advanced to third on the play following an error by the Tiger right fielder.
Justin Williams plated Hall to tie the game, greeting the reliever with an RBI groundout to the shortstop.
Southeastern took the lead in the seventh.
Parker Coley kept the inning alive with a two-out single up the middle.
Christian Garcia took over on the bases as a pinch runner, scoring on
TJ Salvaggio's double of the wall in left-center field.
The Lions extended their lead to 3-1 in the eighth. Hall worked a leadoff walk and then advanced to second on a balk by reliever Justin Loer. Pinch hitter
Dane Watts sacrificed Hall to third. Following an intentional walk to
Ryan Brome,
Shea Thomas pulled an RBI single through the left side.
A one-out single and a two-out walk set the stage in the ninth for LSU. Pinch hitter Ethan Frey double to left-center, driving home a run and putting both the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. Paxton Kling followed with another double, pushing the Tiger back out in front to stay.
Gavin Guidry (1-0) earned the win, tossing one scoreless inning. Nate Ackenhausen earned his first save, fanning the side in the ninth.
Jackson Rodriguez (2-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs – all earned – in 1.1 innings of relief work.
Anderson would finish with 13 strikeouts in his five-inning stint, allowing one unearned run. He did not factor in the decision. Southeastern batters struck out 20 times in the game, tying the program single-game record originally set against Jacksonville State during Regional action on May 16, 1975.
