SLU Win Streak Snapped With 4-3 Loss at HCU

Southeastern (37-9, 12-3 SLC) closes nine-game road swing at Ragin' Cajuns Tuesday at 6 p.m.

HOUSTON – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team's 12-game winning streak was snapped with a 4-3 loss to HCU in Saturday afternoon's Southland Conference finale at Husky Field.

The loss was the first for Southeastern (37-9, 12-3 SLC) since March 25. HCU improved to 19-22 overall and 8-7 in league action.

SLU secured its fifth straight SLC series win with a doubleheader sweep of the Huskies Friday, but could not complete its third straight conference series sweep. Audrey Greely led the Lady Lions with a pair of hits, while Bailey Krolczyk extended her school-record hitting streak to 20 games. Greely, Ka'Lyn Watson and Cam Goodman all drove in runs.

Cera Blanchard (14-5) took the loss in the circle for Southeastern. The Lady Lion junior scattered four hits and struck out seven, allowing two runs in 4.2 innings of relief.

HCU built a 3-0 lead through four innings, before SLU finally got to Husky starter Ronni Grofman (5-2) in the top of the fifth inning. Goodman and Ka'Lyn Watson each drove in runs to cut the lead to 3-2.

Southeastern tied it up in the top of the sixth inning, as Greely evened the game at 3-3 with an RBI single.

HCU scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tabitha Burnett drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on an infield single by Avery Drake, who led the Huskies with four of their seven hits.

Maria Detillier reached on a one-out error in the seventh, but Grofman retired the next two Lady Lions to secure the victory.

Southeastern will be back in action next Tuesday, closing out a nine-game road swing with a 6 p.m. contest at UL Lafayette. The Lady Lions' final nonconference regular season game of 2023 will be televised on ESPN+.
