HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team could not complete a Southland Conference series sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Islanders in the series finale Saturday afternoon at North Oak Park.
SLU fell to 25-8 overall and 4-2 in SLC play with the loss. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 14-13 overall and 2-4 in league action.
Bailey Krolczyk's fifth home run of the season was the highlight of the offense for the Lady Lions, who managed just four hits versus Islander ace Primrose Aholelei (10-8).
Maria Detillier and
Colleen Kulivan each had doubles for SLU.
Cera Blanchard (10-4) allowed four runs (three earned) in three innings of work to take the loss for Southeastern.
KK Ladner tossed four shutout innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out three for SLU.
An RBI single by Syndey Hoyt gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Krolczyk tied it up in the bottom of the second, hitting a solo shot just inside the left field foul pole to pull SLU even at 1-1.
An RBI double by Kimane Rogron just inside the right field line put the Islanders back on top, 2-1 in the third inning. TAMU-CC padded its lead in the fourth inning, as Monee Montilla hit the first pitch of the frame over the right centerfield fence.
Crystal Davila followed with a triple into the right field corner to chase Blanchard. A Lady Lion error allowed Davila to score to stake the Islanders to a 4-1 advantage.
Aholelei sat down 11 straight Lady Lions before Kulivan doubled down the left field line with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Kulivan was left stranded when Aholelei retired
Cam Goodman.
Detillier led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double off the left field fence. However, Aholelei struck out the next three Lady Lions, then sat SLU down in order in the seventh to close out the win.
Southeastern will be back in action Tuesday, traveling to Alcorn State for a 2 p.m. nonconference doubleheader in Lorman, Mississippi.
