Southeastern Drops Game One in Maui

Senior Hailey Giaratno earns 1,000 career points in Maui while tying her career high of 24 points against Oregon State.

Maui, HI – The reigning Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team falls 92-69 to Oregon State in Maui, Hawaii Tuesday evening at Seabury Hall.

Southeastern (4-6) came out to a great start leading Oregon State (9-0) with an 8-4 advantage early into the contest. The Lady Lions finished the quarter in a tight 15-12 battle with the Beavers at the end of the first quarter.

Senior guard Hailey Giaratano reached 1,000 career points going into the second half finishing the night with 24 points. Giaratano shot 78.6 percent from the field and 2-3 from the free-throw line to lead all scorers. The Ponchatoula native has scored double-digits in every non-conference game so far this season and tied her career high of 24 points against Oregon State. Giaratano has started four years for the Lady Lions and been a key impact player for the program.

The Beavers gained some momentum in the second quarter going on a 15-point run to extend their lead. Oregon State obtained its largest scoring margin over the Lady Lions with a 30-12 advantage to end the second quarter. Raegan Beers led the team with 19 points and nine rebounds, shooting 58.3 percent to finish out the game.

SLU continued to fight, but could not contain Oregon State from beyond the arch. The Beavers finished shooting 57.1 percent from the three-point line and extended their biggest lead of the game to a 34-point advantage over the Lady Lions midway in the fourth quarter. Beers, Talia von Oelhoffen and AJ Marotte ended the night in double digit scoring. Marotte only missed one shot from the three-point line shooting 0.75 percent while von Oelhoffen shot 0.80 percent for an exceptional shooting night.

Southeastern had a short run toward the end of the game to lessen the deficit. The Lady Lions ended the fourth quarter with a 23-20 scoring advantage over the Beavers, but it would not be enough.

Taylor Bell contributed double-digit scoring with 12 points and seven rebounds. Cheyanne Daniels trailed with nine points, followed by Kennedy Paul with eight.

The Lady Lions will return to action Wednesday in the Maui Classic against Tulsa for a 9 p.m. Central matchup Dec. 20. Wednesday's game will be the last non-conference game for Southeastern before entering into conference play Jan. 4.
