HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference champions Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team took care of business in its season opener with a 61-30 victory over Millsaps Monday morning at the Pride Roofing University Center.
Southeastern (1-0) had a slow start, but held Millsaps (0-0) to only six points in the first quarter of the contest. The Lady Lions finished the quarter with an 18-6 advantage over the Majors led by junior center
Cheyanne Daniels.
Shawnee Community College transfer Daniels had a dominant performance with 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Lions in both categories. Daniels had a huge impact in the paint finishing around the rim for a 0.56 field goal percentage over the Majors who had no answer.
The Majors went on a five point run mid-way into the second quarter to give Millsaps some momentum. Haley Franklin led the team with 12 points and 7 rebounds to finish out the game.
SLU came out with energy in the third quarter to gain a nine-point advantage over the Majors who capitalized off easy points at the free throw line to chip at the deficit.
Southeastern had its best scoring run in the fourth quarter with a 14-0 run to extend the lead at the end of the game. The Lady Lions built up its biggest lead of the game with 32 points in the fourth quarter with two minutes left on the clock.
Hailey Giaratano contributed double-digit scoring against the Majors with 10 points and 6 rebounds, along with Jones College transfer
Arianna Patton who earned nine points with six ranging from the three-point line. Junior guard
Taylor Bell made an impact with eight points and two rebounds to solidify the lead.
The Lady Lions will return to action Friday, traveling to Starkville for a 6:30 p.m. matchup against Mississippi State Nov. 10.
