SLU Drops to Jackson State at Home

Southeastern falls to Jackson State 63-54 at home.

HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team suffers a tough 63-54 loss to Jackson State Monday afternoon in the Pride Roofing University Center.
 
Southeastern (3-2) came out to a slow start but held Jackson State to 15 points in the first quarter. The Lady Lions shot well in the second quarter shooting 60.0 percent from the field. Hailey Giaratano finishes with yet another game in double digit scoring to lead the team with 13 points.
 
Veteran senior Hailey Giaratano was a spark in the second half for the Lady Lions to cut into the deficit. Giaratano's ability to score from all levels impacted the game for Southeastern to draw closer to a 13-11 advantage in the third quarter.
 
The Tigers came out the gate with an early advantage and held on to their lead for the majority of the game. Jackson State out rebounded the Lady Lions 42-33 to dominate on the boards producing second chance opportunities to extend its lead. Forward Angel Jackson led the team with 13 points to close out the afternoon. Daphne White was the second leading scorer for the Tigers with 12 points and 10 rebounds with four coming from the offensive end.
 
SLU gained a spark in the second half to go on its best scoring run of the game. The Lady Lions had 11 fast break points and forced Jackson State to 16 turnovers. Four players ended the game with two steals to ignite Southeastern's defensive pressure.
 
The Lady Lions continued to fight but the Tigers overpowered them on the boards. Avari Berry came off the bench and contributed nine points as a freshman earning her first career start. Junior Arianna Patton also added nine points shooting 66.0 percent from the field to be a spark off the bench.
 
The Lady Lions will return to play Saturday to take on Mobile at home for a 1 p.m. matchup Nov. 25.
