OXFORD, Miss. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team fell, 5-0, at No. 18 Ole Miss in the regular season opener for both teams Thursday night at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
Southeastern (0-1) saw the host Rebels (1-0) net three goals in the first 20 minutes to take control of the match.
Olivia Griffin went the distance in the net for the Lady Lions, finishing with five saves.
Mya Guillory attempted the lone shot for SLU.
After SLU's
Halli Roe cleared a ball destined for the net in the early minutes, Ole Miss took the lead in the 14
th minute. Griffin turned away a shot from Mo O'Connor, but Lauren Montgomery put the rebound into the back of the net for a 1-0 cushion.
Ole Miss scored the next two goals off set pieces, with both scores coming in the 20
th minute. Marykate McGuire and Aubrey Mister both finished corner kick opportunities for the Rebels to stretch the early advantage to 3-0.
Southeastern settled down after the early onslaught and kept the deficit at three heading into halftime. Ole Miss secured the final margin with goals by O'Connor (58
th minute) and Brenlin Mullaney (73
rd minute) after halftime.
Thursday's match was the first of two road matches to open the regular season for SLU. Southeastern will travel to Jackson, Miss. next Friday for a 1 p.m. match at Jackson State.
