Four Baseball Lions Earn Southland All-Academic Honors

HAMMOND, La. – Four members of the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team earned a spot on the 2022 Southland Conference All-Academic Teams, the league office announced Wednesday.

Evan Keller and Rhett Rosevear earned first-team honors, while Will Kinzeler landed on the second team along with Gage Trahan.

Keller led the Southland in both walks (46) and at bats (231). He also ranked in the conference's Top 5 in runs scored (54), home runs (10), HBPs (15) and stolen bases (25). Keller ended the season with a team-high 36-game reached-base streak. The fifth-year senior from Destrehan, Louisiana graduated from Southeastern this spring with a 3.79 in chemistry.

Rosevear leads the nation in HBPs (37), tying the DI national single-season record. He finished the season ranked second in the Southland in on-base percentage (.466) and fifth in walks (37). Rosevear also ranked in the conference's Top 10 in runs scored (48), triples (3) and sacrifice bunts (5). He reached base in 26 consecutive games earlier in the year and ended the season having reached base in his last 13 games. The sophomore from Denham Springs, Louisiana is majoring in occupational safety, health and environment (OSHE) with a 4.00 GPA.

Kinzeler turned in eight quality starts in his first 12 appearances this season. Despite missing a start in Week 12, he ranked third in ERA (3.60) and fourth in innings pitched (80.0). During his third appearance of the season, Kinzeler defeated No. 3-ranked Arkansas after allowing just one run in six innings of work. The sophomore right-hander from Covington, Louisiana earned All-Conference honors for his performance this season. Kinzeler is a kinesiology major with a 3.49 GPA.

Trahan led the conference with 31 appearances and recorded 11 saves. The save total ranks second in the Southland just one behind the conference leader. He is just the fifth pitcher in program history to record double-digit saves in a single season. Trahan earned All-Conference honors for his performance this season. A graduate student from Maurice, Louisiana, he is working toward his MBA with a 3.33 GPA.

Southland All-Academic teams are voted on by the head coach, sports information director and an academic staff member from each member school. Student-athletes must possess a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA and have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to qualify. Nominees who were on the all-conference first team are automatically named Southland All-Academic.

The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the eight member schools, votes for the Student-Athlete of the Year. Student-Athlete of the Year candidates must have earned at least a 3.20 GPA and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
