HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team completed a Southland Conference sweep of HBU with a 2-1 walk-off victory over the Huskies Saturday afternoon at North Oak Park.
Audrey Greely singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to nail down the victory. The Lady Lions (33-12, 10-2 SLC) extended their winning streak to seven games on the way to moving into a share of the conference lead. The visiting Huskies fell to 12-26 overall and 2-12 in Southland Conference play.
After a pair of lopsided victories Friday, Southeastern found itself in a nail-biter in the series finale. Greely and
Lexi Johnson led the Lady Lions with two hits apiece.
Heather Zumo (16-3) scattered four hits and struck out five in a complete-game effort to earn the win in the circle.
HBU took the early lead in the top of the second inning. Jasie Roberts lined a triple over the head of SLU centerfielder
Cam Goodman, then scored on an RBI single by Kaicey Hagler to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
HBU starter Sarah Venker (1-7) held SLU in check until the bottom of the fifth inning. Johnson and Greely opened the inning with consecutive singles, then
Lindsey Rizzo bunted the runners up to second and third.
Aeriyl Mass then lifted a sacrifice fly deep enough to easily score Johnson and tie the score at 1-1.
Southeastern ended it quickly in the bottom of the seventh inning. Johnson drew a leadoff walk and was replaced on the base paths by
Blaire Bizette. Bizette stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. With the outfield playing in, Greely lined a shot well over Roberts' head in left field to allow Bizette to walk home with the winning run.
SLU will be back in action this weekend, closing out its Southland Conference road schedule at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The series opens with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday and concludes with a noon contest on Saturday. Friday's twin bill will be on ESPN+ and Saturday's game will be streamed on Islanders Digital Network.
