HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team begins Southland Conference play this weekend, hosting in-state rival Nicholls in a three-game series at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
Southeastern's annual Baseball Alumni Day will be held in conjunction with Sunday's game. A pregame reunion for all baseball alumni and staff will be held before the game at 11:30 a.m. and there will be on-field recognition prior to the first pitch. Baseball alums interested in attending should RSVP with
Allie Crain in the LAA office at
allie.crain@southeastern.edu.
All three games this weekend will air on ESPN+.
Fans in the Hammond area can also listen to the entire series on the flagship station of the Southeastern Sports Radio Network – KSLU 90.9 FM – in addition to online at www.LionSports.net/ListenLive and via both the Lions Gameday Experience, Mixlr and MyTuner Radio apps. The MyTuner app is compatible with the Apple CarPlay software available in most late model automobiles. Fans should search for SLU Athletics (Mixlr) or Southeastern Sports Radio Network (MyTuner).
Under a new conference schedule format, Southeastern (8-13) and Nicholls (10-9) will play two conference series against each other this season. Every Southland school has a designated rival on their schedule they will face in both the first and last conference series of the season.
The new season format ties into a format change for the conference tournament. A new and improved version of the Southland tournament means the regular season will wrap up a week earlier than in past years and all eight teams qualifying. The No. 1 and No. 2-seeded teams will host bracket play at their home ballparks the weekend of May 19-22.
Bracket winners advance to a best 2-of-3 championship series, May 26-28, hosted by the highest remaining seed in the tournament.
Nicholls leads the all-time series, which dates back to the 1960 season, 116-102-2. The Lions hold a 55-53-1 advantage in games played in Hammond.
Will Kinzeler (2-0, 1.97), a sophomore right-hander from Covington, Louisiana, takes the ball for SLU in the opener against Colonel senior left-hander Tyler Theriot (3-1, 2.63).
Senior right-hander
Hunter O'Toole (1-2, 5.88) draws the Lions' starting assignment Saturday opposite Nicholls senior right-hander Chase Gearing (2-1, 3.48).
Wrapping up the series Sunday afternoon, the Colonels will start senior right-hander Nick Heckman (0-1, 3.44). SLU has not announced a starting pitcher for the series finale.
Since defeating No. 1-ranked Ole Miss, the Lions have dropped their last four games.
Tristan Welch (.313),
Preston Faulkner (.276) and
Shea Thomas (.246) pace Southeastern at the plate. Faulkner leads the squad with 12 extra-base hits, including four home runs, and 15 RBIs.
Evan Keller and
Tyler Finke are tied for tops on the team with eight stolen bases each.
Rhett Rosevear is the national leader in HBPs (153) while SLU ranks third nationally as a team (51).
Southeastern has homered at least once in each of its last six games. The Lions last accomplished the feat, March 31-April 11, 2018, homering in seven consecutive games during that stretch.
The Colonels, who had an open date this past weekend, picked up a 6-5 home victory Wednesday over UL Lafayette.
Jaden Collura (.415), Parker Coddou (.317), Xane Washington (.314) and Edgar Alvarez (.311) are Nicholls' leading hitters. Alvarez' seven extra-base hits and 20 RBIs are tops on the team. Dane Simon leads the squad with nine stolen bases.
UP NEXT
Southeastern wraps up a four-game homestand Tuesday at 6 p.m. against UL Lafayette for the annual Pack the Pat game. The first 300 SLU students through the gates will receive a free T-shirt and food.
