Huskies Use Second Half Surge to Defeat Lions

Hinton's 22 Points Not Enough as SLU Falls to HBU

HOUSTON, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team Saturday scored 50 first half points but couldn't hang on to the lead as they fell, 93-80, to HBU Saturday night at Sharp Gymnasium in Houston.

SLU (12-12, 4-3 Southland) was led by Jalyn Hinton with 22 points and nine rebounds while Ryan Burkhardt had 16 points, including four three-pointers. Sophomore Roscoe Eastmond chipped in with 12 to pace the Lions.

HBU (7-13, 3-4) was led by Darius Lee scoring a game-high 32 points on 9-for-17 shooting and 12-for-13 at the free throw line. The Huskies also got 15 points from Brycen Long while Jade Tse added 14.

Southeastern came out strong in the first half shooting 17-for-30 (56.5 percent) from the field. Despite 10 first half turnovers, the Lions finished the half on a 12-2 run to take a 50-44 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Lions' foul trouble began to mount as Keon Clergeot and Joe Kasperzyk combined to play just 30 minutes while being whistled for nine fouls.

Despite the foul trouble, the Lions held strong with the game tied at 66-66 with 9:43 left. However, the Huskies went on a 19-5 run over the next 6:40 of the game to take an 85-71 lead, pulling away for the win.

SLU finished with a season-high 21 turnovers while shooting 9-for-26 (34 percent) in the second half. HBU shot 28-for-61 (45.9 percent) from the field for the game but was 31-for-40 (77 percent) from the free throw line.

Next up, the Lions will return home to face McNeese (9-15, 3-4 Southland) Thursday night at 8 p.m. SLU will be looking for their third straight win over McNeese this season. The Lions defeated the Cowboys on Jan 7 at the Southland Tip-Off in Katy, Texas and last Thursday on the road.
