Southeastern Closes Out Mardi Gras Mambo with 8-0 Shutout Victory Over St. Thomas (MN)

SLU (10-3) caps 4-1 tournament showing with third straight shutout win

YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team closed out the Mardi Gras Mambo with an 8-0 run-rule victory over St. Thomas (MN) Sunday morning at the Youngsville Sports Complex.

The shutout victory was the third straight and sixth of the season for Southeastern (10-3). Mary-Cathryn (MC) Comeaux (4-2), Ellie DuBois and KK Ladner combined to hold St. Thomas (2-8) to four hits and teamed for 10 strikeouts in the win.

Maddie Watson and Bailey Krolczyk each homered in Sunday's win for SLU, while Madison Rayner drove in a team-high three runs. Aeriyl Mass scored two runs for the Lady Lions.

Sunday capped an impressive 4-1 showing at the tournament for Southeastern with the lone blemish coming at the hands of No. 2 Alabama Friday.

"We were great in the circle this weekend and we had good production throughout the lineup," SLU head coach Rick Fremin said. "We played with great energy all weekend and I thought our team responded well to the adverse weather conditions."

The Lady Lions jumped on top against St. Thomas starter Megan Baniecke (1-4) in the bottom of the first inning. Mass singled to lead off the frame and scored two outs later on a double into the left field corner by Madisen Blackford. The next pitch saw Krolczyk hit her first home run as a Lady Lion over the left field fence for a 3-0 lead.

Southeastern doubled its lead in the bottom of the second inning. Singles by Lindsey Rizzo and Cam Goodman coupled with a walk issued to Mass loaded the bases. Rayner would then clear the base paths with a three-run double into the left centerfield gap. The Stringer, Mississippi native's team-high seven two-bagger of the year put SLU up, 6-0.

The SLU trio of Comeaux, DuBois and Ladner, as well as Tommie reliever Kendall Hopkins matched zeroes until Southeastern ended it in the fifth. Lexi Johnson led off the inning with a double and two outs later, Watson powered her third home run of the season to enforce the run-rule victory.

Southeastern will close out its 11-game road swing Wednesday with a 4 p.m. contest at Louisiana Tech.
