LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team closed out play at the Troy Cox Invitational with an 11-1 loss to Nebraska Sunday morning at the NM State Softball Complex.
SLU fell to 6-2 overall with the loss. Nebraska, which Southeastern shutout Friday, 2-0, ran its record to 6-4 thanks to four home runs.
Madisen Blackford led SLU with two hits and an RBI, driving in teammate
Madison Rayner. MC Comeaux (3-1) took the loss in the circle for the Lady Lions.
Nebraska struck first in the bottom of the third inning. Back-to-back home runs by Cam Ybarra and Sydney Gray chased Comeaux from the game and gave the Cornhuskers a 3-0 lead.
Southeastern cut into the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Rayner doubled down the left field line and scored when Blackford followed with an RBI single to pull the Lady Lions within two.
Nebraska broke the game open over the final two innings. A grand slam by Olivia Ferrell in the fifth put the Cornhuskers up, 7-1. Gray's second home run of the contest enforced the mercy rule for Nebraska in the sixth inning.
Southeastern will continue its road swing this week, traveling to the Mardi Gras Combo in Youngsville, Louisiana. The tournament runs Friday through Sunday.
