HAMMOND, La- The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team returned to the win column with a 2-1 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Southland Conference action Friday night at Strawberry Stadium.
After starting the conference season with a pair of victories, SLU (5-4-3, 3-2-3 SLC) had endured a five-match winless stretch that saw the Lady Lions go 0-2-3 before breaking the trend Friday. The visiting Islanders fell to 7-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 in league play.
Sara Bancevic scored the game-winner for Southeastern, while both
Victoria Brackmann and
Emma Jones were credited with assists for SLU. Lady Lion goalkeeper
Olivia Griffin tallied six saves to earn the win.
Southeastern used good fortune to take the lead in the ninth minute.
Mya Guillory played a ball on frame that Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Jayden Rea looked poised to clear. However, the ball deflected off Rea's head and straight into the net past Islander goalkeeper Zoe Theriot.
The Lady Lions doubled their advantage in the 25
th minute off a set piece. Brackmann settled Jones' free kick, played a cross out of the reach of Theriot and Bancevic was there to put in the point blank shot for her second score of the season and a 2-0 SLU cushion.
The Islanders cut the lead in half with just over four minutes remaining in the opening half. Griffin turned away a shot from Natalie Gonzalez, but Mai-Lisa Atis was right there to put in the rebound to cut the halftime deficit to 2-1.
Griffin made the lead standup, finishing with three saves in the second half. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi managed six shots in the final 45 minutes, but it was unable to draw even as Southeastern secured its first win since a 3-0 win over Nicholls Sept. 16.
SLU will close out the home weekend Sunday, hosting HCU for a 1 p.m. match. The SLC contest will be televised on ESPN+.
