Huston Leads Lady Lions to 2-1 Victory Over UIW

SLU's Huston Nets First Career Goal to Aid Win over Cardinals

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Claire Huston scored her first career goal and assisted on Mia Milton's game winner to propel the Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Incarnate Word Sunday afternoon at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.

The Lady Lions (3-5-1, 2-2-1 Southland) took the lead in the 30th minute of the first half when Huston, a senior, launched one from almost 30 yards out that sailed into the top left corner of the net giving SLU a 1-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Milton scored her second goal of the season off a corner from Huston in the 62nd minute to give SLU some breathing room and a 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals (1-7-1, 1-2-0 Southland) quickly answered as Sierra Wannamaker netted her second goal of the season in the 64th minute to cut the SLU lead in half.

The Southeastern defense would clamp down the rest of the way allowing just three shots in the final 25 minutes of the match to hold on for the hard-fought road win.

"Claire's leadership and performance the last couple of games has been terrific," said SLU head coach Chris McBride. "She played the corner to Mia beautifully. It was nice to see because they both deserved goals because of how hard they've worked. It was a gritty team performance and we're happy with the result."

The Lady Lions finished the match with eight shots to 12 for UIW. Both teams had seven corner kicks.

Individually, SLU featured a balanced attack with seven different players attempting a shot led by Makenzie Maher with two. Senior goalkeeper Nadine Maher finished with five saves to help the Lady Lions to the win.

Next up, SLU will take on Nicholls (0-8, 0-4 Southland) on the road Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Thibodaux, Louisiana as Southland Conference action continues. Sunday, the Lady Lions will step out of conference to take on Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Louisiana at 1 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for Aug. 29 but was postponed due to Hurricane Ida.
