THIBODAUX, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team won its fourth straight Southland Conference series opener on Friday, defeating Nicholls, 6-1, at Swanner Field.
The Lady Lions improved to 18-13 overall and 8-2 in league play. The Colonels fell to 8-14 on the season with a 1-9 mark in Southland action.
Audrey Greely hit her first collegiate home run and drove in three runs in a 2-for-2 performance, while
Lindsey Rizzo added two hits of her own and
Cameron Beal scored two runs to highlight the SLU offensive attack.
Heather Zumo (11-2) continued her dominance in the circle, striking out six and allowing just one hit in five shutout innings. She and reliever
Ellie DuBois combined to hold the Colonels to just three hits.
Southeastern left the bases loaded in the top of the first against Nicholls starter Taryn Westbrook (2-2), but got on the board in the second. Beal singled and advanced to third on consecutive sacrifices by Greely and
Cameron Goodman. A throwing error by shortstop Ashlyn Reavis allowed Beal to score and gave the Lady Lions a 1-0 advantage.
SLU padded its lead in the top of the third inning. Another Reavis error scored
Madisen Blackford, who led off the inning with a single. Greely singled home another unearned run to put Southeastern on top, 3-0.
Zumo cruised early, retiring the first 10 Colonels she faced. A Kelsey Miller single in the fourth broke up the perfect game and Melise Gossen reached on an error to put a pair of runners on. However, Zumo retired Samantha Gwiazda to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Lady Lions broke open the game in the top of the fifth inning with a two-out rally. Following a Beal walk, Greely powered a two-run home run well over the left centerfield fence. Goodman followed with a triple and scored on an RBI double by Mass to give Southeastern a commanding 6-0 advantage.
Reavis greeted DuBois with a triple to lead off the bottom of the sixth and scored on an infield single by Miller. The Colonels would get no closer, as following a Kennedy Hebert walk, DuBois retired the final six batters she faced to secure the victory.
