Lions Sweep Doubleheader, Remain in First

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana swept a Southland Conference doubleheader from Stephen F. Austin, 6-2 and 7-4, Saturday at Jaycees Field.

With the pair of wins over SFA (12-18, 9-9 SLC), the Lions (22-12, 15-7 SLC) remain in first place in the conference standings with a half-game lead over New Orleans (20-15, 15-8 SLC).

The series concludes Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The first game is slated to be a seven-inning contest. If the first game goes extra innings, the second game would then become a seven-inning affair.

Sunday's games can be heard in the Hammond area on the flagship station of the Southeastern Sports Radio Network – KSLU 90.9 FM – in addition to online at www.LionSports.net/ListenLive and via both the Lions Gameday Experience and TuneIn Radio apps. There will be no radio coverage of Saturday's games.

GAME ONE – Southeastern 6, SFA 2
Will Warren dominated on the mound and the Lions scored in four different innings on the way to the series-opening victory.

Warren (6-1) struck out a career-high 11 batters, allowing one run in 6.1 innings pitched to earn the win. The junior right-hander from Brandon, Mississippi scattered four hits and two walks. Kyle Flettrich and Noah Hughes combined to close out the game.

Southeastern broke through in the third inning. Tyler Finke drew a two-out walk and then stole second base. He scored in Christian Garcia's RBI single to center field.

The Lions expanded their lead in the fifth. Bryce Grizzaffi and Evan Keller hit back-to-back double to open up the frame. Grizzaffi scored on Keller's hit and Tyler Finke followed up with a two-run home run to left-center field. The blast was Finke's third home run in the last four games.

Designated hitter Gaby Cruz led off the sixth with a solo homer to left field. It was his first as a Lion and the 14th of his Division I career.

SFA picked up a run off Warren in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff double followed by a pair of groundouts combined to break up the shutout bid. He closed out the inning with a strikeout.

Christian Garcia drew a leadoff walk in the seventh, advancing to third base on a wild pitch and a passed ball. He came home to score the Lions' final run on Champ Artigues' RBI single down the right-field line.

The Lumberjacks picked up the game's final run in the eighth, loading the bases on three consecutive singles and scoring on a sacrifice fly.

Warren fanned at least one batter during every inning in which he appeared, striking out a pair in each of the first three.

GAME TWO – Southeastern 7, SFA 4
Southeastern got five shutout innings out of starting pitcher Will Kinzeler before the Lions broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning.

Eli Johnson was hit by a pitch from reliever Harrison Lee to open up the inning and was balked to second base. With two outs, pinch hitter Rhett Rosevear worked a walk and Evan Keller was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tyler Finke followed with a two-run double inside the third-base line and Christian Garcia blasted a three-run homer well over the left-field wall.

The game tightened up in the bottom of the seventh. SFA touched relievers Dalton Aspholm and Daniel Dugas for a pair of runs each, pulling within a run.

Southeastern got a run back in the eighth. Rosevear worked a one-out walk and then stole second. He scored on a two-out error by the Lumberjack third baseman on a grounder off the bat of Finke.

The Lions added an insurance run in the ninth. With one out, Eli Johnson was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball. Champ Artigues followed with a run-scoring double down the right-field line.

Kinzeler (4-1) earned the win, tossing five scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and four walks, striking out four batters. Cole Hoskins retired the side in the ninth to pick up his team-leading fifth save of the season. Reliever Harrison Lee (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing five runs in 0.2 innings pitched.
