CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Facing Central Arkansas for the second time in as many matches, No. 3-seeded Southeastern Louisiana fell, 25-17, 25-17, 19-25, 25-20, to the Sugar Bears in quarterfinal action Thursday in the Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament at the Dugan Wellness Center.
An efficient attack by UCA (12-7, 8-4 Southland) was too much for the Lady Lions (11-5, 9-3 Southland) to overcome in the first two sets. Southeastern bounced back, hitting .333 in the third set, but was unable to sustain the momentum into the final set.
Kailin Newsome, the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, led all players with 19 kills. Her streak of 10 consecutive double-doubles came to an end with just nine digs, but she also contributed a pair of service aces and three total blocks.
Ryan Maddera added eight kills for the Lady Lions, while
Karlee Wilkerson, a junior from Springfield, Louisiana, and
Jolie Hidalgo chipped in five apiece.
Ariana Hebert handed out 27 assists and
Calli Collins recorded her fourth double-double of the season (18 assists, 13 digs). Both setters served up one ace each.
Ansley Tullis, Southeastern's freshman libero from Slidell, Louisiana, contributed three assists and had 13 digs.
Despite back-to-back losses to end the season, Southeastern finished the year with its first winning record since 2002.
