HAMMOND, La.  – Jaime Raines scored on a header in the 105
th minute on a cross from
Ellie Williams to send the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team to a heart stopping victory over Stephen F. Austin, 2-1, in double overtime Sunday at Strawberry Stadium.
Â
The Lady Lions (2-2-1 Southland) were led by sophomore
Mya Guillory, who scored the match's first goal on a penalty kick, with six shots and three on goal. Sophomore
Makenzie Maher added four shots and two on goal, while Raines had two shots.
SFA (6-3-2, 4-1-0 Southland) hadn't allowed a goal in the previous four matches until Guillory's penalty kick in the 80
th minute. Williams set up the penalty as she beat her defender one-on-one forcing a foul inside the box. Moments later, Guillory punched it through the bottom left corner for the goal for her third goal of the season.
Â
The Ladyjacks wasted little time in tying the game. SFA's Carli Arthurs scored less than two minutes later on a lead from 20 yards out from Lauren Prentice which sent the match to overtime.
Â
The score remained tied at 1-1 until the 105
th minute when Williams got to the outside and lofted a cross in front of the net. Raines came flying in to deflect it in to the back of the net for the game winner as the Lady Lions stormed the field in celebration.
Â
"Ellie did really well out wide on that play," said fourth-year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "She was battling with their left back for most of the game but she was able to cut back inside several times throughout the match and get a couple of good crosses. She also won us the penalty kick on the first goal. We told her to keep driving in and making their defenders back pedal and that gave us time to get the cross in there to Jamie and leap above their defender for the goal."
Â
Sunday was the fourth time in five matches the Lady Lions had played a double overtime game this season. SLU defeated Lamar in the season opener on a golden goal by Guillory. Last Sunday, the Lady Lions were defeated in double overtime by Northwestern State. Then this weekend, Southeastern played Sam Houston to a 0-0 tie before the win Sunday over SFA.
Â
"After Friday's game where we went into double overtime (with Sam Houston)," said McBride. "And SFA getting a big win and being able to rest some players, we knew the emphasis today had to be on energy level. And we knew we needed all 31 players on the team to encourage and push forward and we had that today."
Â
The Lady Lions will return to action Friday night as they host McNeese (2-3-1, 2-2-1 Southland) at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.
