HAMMOND, La. – Mya Guillory scored in the 73
rd minute off a corner kick assist from
Claire Huston to give the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team a 2-1 win over McNeese Friday night in Strawberry Stadium.
The Lady Lions (3-2-1 Southland) finished their three-game homestand undefeated (2-0-1) with wins over Stephen F. Austin and McNeese a tie against Sam Houston.
SLU was led by Guillory, a sophomore, with four shots, a goal and an assist.
Megan Gordon,
Ellie Williams and
Makenzie Maher each had two shots while Maher scored the game's first goal on the assist from Williams.
The Cowgirls (2-4-1, 2-3-1 Southland) scored the match's first goal in the fourth minute when Havana Johnson punched in her third goal of the season on an assist from Delana Freisen.
Southeastern quickly responded as they tied the match on the great cross from Guillory to Maher in the seventh minute.
The match remained tied until the 73
rd when Huston lofted a corner kicked into the box. Guillory came rushing in from the far side and drilled in the goal, her fourth of the season, for the eventual game-winner.
"Claire played a great ball," said Guillory. "I saw the keeper go for the ball and bat it down instead of catching it. I saw it right there in the box and I just kind of flicked it into the goal. It was almost slow motion."
The Lady Lions outshot the Cowgirls, 16-4, including seven shots on goal to three.
"This match just goes into our mentality again," said fourth-year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "We went down a goal and had to come back again, similar to the game at Lamar. We knew they were going to be athletic and they caught us off guard with it. But we responded really well and I'm proud of this team tonight. McNeese made a lot of adjustments that we had to adapt to and the team handled it very well."
Next up, SLU will have two weeks off before going on the road to take on the University of Incarnate Word Friday, March 26 in San Antonio, Texas at 7 p.m.
