HAMMOND, La.  – The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team outshot Sam Houston 18-7 but was unable to cash in on the opportunities in front of the net in Friday's 0-0 tie in the Lady Lions' home opener at Strawberry Stadium.
Â
The Lady Lions (1-2-1 Southland) controled the pace of the game as they held possession for 59 percent of the match.
Â
SLU was led by
Makenzie Maher with four shots while
Jamie Raines and
Ellie Williams each had three. Southeastern finished the match with six shots on goal and had five corner kicks to SHU's three.
Â
Sam Houston (0-1-1 Southland) goalkeeper Abby DeLozier finished with six saves including a pair in the overtime periods to help the Bearkats secure the tie.
Â
The Lady Lions nearly scored just minutes into the game when Raines got a great shot off from 15 yards out that was partially deflected by DeLozier and hit the crossbar before sailing out of bounds.
Â
Southeastern picked up the pressure in the last four minutes of regulation as they got three shots off including one by
Ellie Williams that was knocked away by DeLozier in the 87
th minute.
Â
In the first overtime, Maher got a good look from 20 yards out but missed just high as Southeastern appeared to have Sam Houston on their heels. But the Bearkats managed to escape the first overtime.
Â
In double overtime, the Lady Lions continued to push the tempo as Maher got off a shot headed to the bottom right corner but was tipped away by DeLozier. In the final minute of double overtime, Maher again created some space as she faked out the defender and flicked it over DeLozier's head, however the ball trickled just left of the post as the Bearkats avoided SLU's golden opportunity at the golden goal.
Â
Southeastern will look to even their record Sunday afternoon when they host Stephen F. Austin (6-2-2, 4-0 Southland). SFA enters Sunday's match with four straight shutouts following a 5-0 win over Nicholls Friday night.
Â
SFA leads the all-time series over SLU, 20-11-9. But Southeastern picked up a victory last year on the road over the Lady 'Jacks, 2-1, as sophomore
Ellie Williams scored the game winning goal in the 77
th minute.
Â
Sunday's game will be on ESPN+, available on www.WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app.
