SLU Pushes Undefeated Lady Demons to the Brink, Falls In Overtime 1-0

SLU Drops Tough One in OT to Lady Demons

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Northwestern State's Hallie Field scored off a corner kick assist from Kyle Nolen in the 97th minute to edge the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team, 1-0, in overtime Sunday afternoon at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.

Southeastern (1-2 Southland) finished the match with four shots, one each by Claire Huston, Hitomi Konno, Jamie Raines and Mya Guillory.

Northwestern State (6-0, 4-0 Southland) had six shots including two from Field and Kalee Williams and one each from Nolen and Rachel Brandt.

SLU pushed the Lady Demons, who have not allowed a goal in their last 519 minutes of action, to the brink as they refused to back down from the physicality of the match. The game featured five yellow cards (Northwestern State 3, SLU 2).

Guillory, who scored the Lady Lions' golden goal in the season-opening win over Lamar, nearly won the match again for the SLU. The sophomore was able to create space and get off a good shot from 20 yards out with just 3:15 left in regulation. the shot was deflected in front of the net and just missed the cross bar keeping the game scoreless at the end of regulation.

Early in overtime, the teams alternated field position. However, in the 97th minute, Nolen lofted a corner kick up in front of the SLU net as Field came flying in for the header and the game-winner which was the only shot on goal for either team throughout the match.

"Northwestern State's game plan was good," said SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "They're always defensively organized, disciplined and structured. I thought after halftime we were against it for the first 10 minutes of the second half but we did a good job of getting some momentum and creating opportunities. But we gave away a set piece at the end and they finished it and I tip my hat to them."

Next up, the Lady Lions will host Sam Houston (0-1 Southland) Friday night at Strawberry Stadium in the home opener at 7 p.m. SLU will then take on Stephen F. Austin (5-2-2, 3-0 Southland) Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at home.
