CONWAY, Ark. – Abby Gibson scored two goals for Central Arkansas as the Southeastern Louisiana women' soccer team lost 3-0 to UCA Friday night at the Bill Stephens Track and Soccer Complex.
Â
Southeastern (1-1 Southland) was led by
Makenzie Maher and
Megan Gordon with two shots each. Gibson led UCA with four shots.
Â
The Sugar Bears (10-3-1, 1-1 Southland) scored first late in the first half. Set up by a corner kick, Abby Gibson scored on an assist from Alyssa Aultman in the 35
th minute.
Â
SLU had a chance with three seconds left in the first half when Gordon was fouled in the box. Moments later, Maher's penalty kick was saved by UCA goalkeeper Reagan McCombs. It appeared that the Lady Lions had scored on the rebound before the first half buzzer sounded but the official waved off the SLU goal to keep the Sugar Bears in front at halftime, 1-0. SLU, however, outshot UCA 5-2 in the first half.
Â
UCA put the game away early in the second half as Gibson scored again in the 56
th minute and Zoe Van de Cloot netted one in the 58
th minute.
Â
Central Arkansas finished with nine shots while SLU had eight. Southeastern had five on goal to UCA's four. The Sugar Bears had five corner kicks to SLU's one, two of which led to goals.
Â
"Central Arkansas is an experienced team," said SLU head coach Chris McBride. "They played 12 games last fall, they are experienced and it showed. At the end of the first half, we rebounded on the penalty and scored but the referee said time had already ran out. That was a turning point three seconds before the end of the half. I thought in the first half we created good opportunities and they converted a goal off of a deflection. Overall our inexperience showed but it will be a great learning opportunity for us moving forward."
Next up, the Lady Lions will travel south to take on Northwestern State (5-0, 3-0 Southland) Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex in Natchitoches, Louisiana. The Lady Demons defeated Houston Baptist 2-0 Friday night and have outscored opponents 10-1 in their first five matches.
